Ukrainian World Congress urges EU to recommend solution to Tymoshenko problem

2 min read

President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) Eugene Czolij has sent a letter to the leaders of the European Union, including the European Parliament's observers for Ukraine former Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and former European Parliament President Pat Cox, calling on them to recommend a solution to the situation with former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

According to the Batkivschyna Party's press service, referring to a press release of the UWC, Czolij mentioned his meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on August 27, during which Yanukovych stated that Ukraine had political will to fulfill the EU's requirement regarding the Tymoshenko case.

"However, according to Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine's legislation does not provide for any mechanism to accomplish this. Czolij expressed the opinion that Viktor Yanukovych could use his presidential powers to resolve this issue, to which the president of Ukraine answered that those powers were not broad enough," reads the press release.

"Notwithstanding this difference of opinion concerning the existence of mechanisms to resolve this important matter, the UWC president called on the EU leaders to recommend without delay a solution that is available under Ukrainian legislation regarding Yulia Tymoshenko, so that the strategically important EU-Ukraine Association Agreement can be signed during the third Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius on November 28-29, 2013," reads the press release.
