Popesku: PACE chooses not to politicize situation around Ukraine

Chairman of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE MP Ivan Popesku of the Party of Regions has said that the assembly has chosen not to politicize the situation around Ukraine, when it passed the amendments to remove Ukraine's issue from the resolution entitled "Keeping political and criminal responsibility separate."

"The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe decided not to politicize the situation around Ukraine and agreed with the amendments, which were unanimously supported by the political and legal committee of PACE," the press service of the Party of Regions quoted Popesku as saying.

According to the MP, amendments 2 and 4 which offer to remove the mention of Ukraine from the resolution were adopted at a meeting of PACE on Friday. "A total of 79 members from different political forces voted for these amendments, and only seven abstained. Naturally, five representatives of the opposition abstained, as well as a representative of Hungary and a representative of Portugal. But all of them are members of the EPP (European People's Party), a partner of our opposition," the politician said.

Thus, the mention of Ukraine has been removed from the draft resolution of PACE, the MP said. "This has been done in order not to politicize the situation in Ukraine, especially before the summit, which will take place in Vilnius in November, when the Association Agreement will be signed," Popesku said.
