Yanukovych proposes to hold party list voting with preferences

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has proposed that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine amend the election law for party list voting with preferences.

The annual message of Viktor Yanukovych to Verkhovna Rada "On the domestic and foreign position of Ukraine in 2013" reported this.

"To improve the election system and election procedures, it's necessary to consider the reasonability of such measures as a transfer to party list voting with preferences, the introduction of additional criteria when determining the borders of territorial election districts, ensuring political parties, that have factions at the Verkhovna Rada of the present convocation have a priority right to form the staff of election commissions, and setting limits on spending on the election campaigns of political parties and candidates for people's deputies of Ukraine," the president said.

"It's evident that the problem of the optimization of the election law is still current, and it must become one of the main pints on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation," the document reads.

Yanukovych called on the MPs to intensify their work on the Election Code, which could unify a great number of election rules and procedures.

Moreover, the head of the state called on MPs to elaborate a new election law based on European political and legal standards.
