Yatseniuk notes need to amend law on CEC ahead of presidential elections

Batkivschyna faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk has demanded that amendments to the law on the Central Election Commission be immediately adopted.

"Ukraine should immediately introduce amendments to the law on the Central Election Commission," he said at a plenary meeting of parliament on Tuesday.

He said that the procedure for electing members of the Central Election Commission should be changed. He said that the Central Election Commission should consist of one representative from each parliamentary faction and one representative from independent lawmakers.

"These amendments should be introduced before the presidential elections... Our demands are the adoption of the law and a vote on members under the new law," Yatseniuk said.

UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko, in turn, said that a new member of the CEC, who will be elected in place of Volodymyr Shapoval, should represent the opposition factions.

"Our principled position is that the president should hold consultations with representatives of the opposition forces," he said.
