IAEA experts to check reasons for February 12 ceiling collapse at Chornobyl NPP

A delegation of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has started its work at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to consider the reasons for the partial collapse of the ceiling and wall constructions in turbine room No. 4 at the NPP that occurred on February 12, 2013, as well as to check the course of the cleanup operations following the collapse and evaluate its consequences.

A posting on the Web site of the NPP reads that the delegation includes IAEA experts and international experts in the spheres of nuclear safety, the supervision of building structures, and safety culture.

Chornobyl NPP Director General Ihor Hramotkin said that the NPP's administration initiated the delegation's visit. The administration of Chornobyl NPP asked the IAEAto make independent evaluation of the incident and actions of the staff to tackle the consequences.

The experts will examine the materials of the investigations into the collapse, technical and design documents, and the results of radiation checks at the scene. They will also visit turbine room No. 4 at the NPP.

The experts will prepare a report on the results of their mission.

On February 12, a partial collapse of the ceiling and wall construction occurred in a turbine room at Chornobyl NPP. The site of the accident was an area of 600 square meters. The radiation levels did not change on the territory of the Chornobyl NPP and in the exclusion zone around it. No one was injured by the fallen slabs.
