Ukraine, Eurasian Economic Commission agree on deeper interaction, memo

Ukraine and Eurasian Economic Commission have agreed on closer cooperation.

As a correspondent of Interfax-Ukraine reported, a memorandum on this was signed in Minsk on Friday by Premier of Ukraine Mykola Azarov and Chairman of the Board of Eurasian Economic Commission Viktor Khrystenko.

As reported, the memorandum foresees the participation of Ukraine in the work of the Eurasian Economic Commission and in its structures.

"Today the memorandum on deeper cooperation between Eurasian Economic Commission and Ukrainian government was signed. This is an essential component in completion of the relations with Ukraine, which is a strategic partner for us," Khrystenko told journalists after the ceremony to mark the signing this document.

He said that the memorandum allows Ukraine at all levels to participate in the work of all structures of Common Economic Space (CES) and the Customs Union, to gain access to whole information base of the CES and to have Ukraine's own permanent representative in this agency.

Ukrainian government promised to post the content of the document after signing.

Before signing the document, Azarov told journalists in Minsk that the memo to be signed between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Commission would help Ukraine participate in the meetings of the Customs Union agencies, effectively giving the country the status of an observer.

"We will sign the memorandum, and after that Ukraine will have the opportunity, at the invitation of the presiding party, to participate in the meeting of the Customs Union agencies and later the Eurasian Economic Union," Azarov told reporters in Minsk on Friday.

He said that this was no different from having the status of an "observer" in the Customs Union.

"In practice, this is no different from [having] the status of an observer," Azarov said.

Azarov said that the participation of a Ukrainian representative in the work of the Customs Union would help Ukraine track the documents adopted by the union, as well as discuss trade and economic issues at the level of the leadership of states.

He said that relations with the Customs Union are vitally important to Ukraine.

The Customs Union members-states did not impose any terms on Ukraine for signing a memorandum with the Eurasian Economic Commission to allow Kyiv to participate in the work of the Customs Union's agencies, Azarov added.
