Ukraine may join some Customs Union, Common Economic Area agreements - PM Azarov

Ukraine is not going to limit itself to observer status in the Belarusian-Kazakh-Russian Customs Union and is willing to join a number of agreements that make up the Customs Union's and the Common Economic Area's legal basis, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said.

"It is quite possible for us to join a number of agreements. After completing an analysis, we will propose to our partners that we set up a negotiating group of quite a high level, so as to decide together within the shortest possible time on what agreements [within the Customs Union] Ukraine may join without amending their text," Azarov said on Belarusian television on Tuesday evening.

The particular agreements that Ukraine may be willing to join will be identified through negotiations, he said.

As an observer in the Customs Union, Ukraine will receive information on decisions prepared by its member states, which would enable Ukraine, acting through diplomatic channels, to prevent the adoption of decisions that could be seen as protectionist, Azarov said.

It was reported earlier that, when asked when Ukraine will join the Customs Union as an observer, Azarov replied that this could happen on Wednesday.
