People's deputies and deputies of local councils must be punished if they commit illegal actions, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

"Cases of hindering the activities of state agencies or local governments, especially those connected with the breaking of doors, not only fill me with indignation, I also think that such things happen because of impunity of those who do them. And if they evade punishment at once, they impudently break the law again," the premier wrote on his page on Facebook on Friday in response to a posting about the immunity of Svoboda faction members that broke the door at Kyiv City Council.

Azarov said he thinks that the prosecution agencies have to respond to such cases very decisively. And if people's deputies are involved in criminal cases, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, should consider the possible cancellation of their immunities.

"In any civilized country such actions are considered a serious violation of the legislation, and receive quick response," the premier said.

As reported, on May 22 in the morning, people's deputies of the Svoboda All-Ukrainian Association broke the door of the session hall of Kyiv City Council in order to ensure that their assistants had access to the session hall. In turn, Svoboda's spokesperson said that the door was not broken, but that the MPs had simply taken it off its hinges, and that it had been repaired.
