UK ambassador: Ukrainian parliament faces confrontation, rather than pragmatic work

2 min read

British Ambassador to Ukraine Simon Smith has said that the Verkhovna Rada has not yet started working in full after the parliamentary elections in 2012.

"On the one hand, it is too early to sum up the work of parliament and talk about any results, because, in my opinion, it has not yet started working in full, as it could have worked. We see that political forces in parliament have not yet outlined for themselves the list of issues on which they can reach a consensus, and we see that at present the situation seems to us like confrontation, rather than pragmatic work based on compromise," Smith said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine, while analyzing the situation in the Verkhovna Rada.

However, as an exception, he provided statements on European Integration, which were adopted by a majority of votes in the Ukrainian parliament.

The diplomat noted that European ministers could have two main questions in the context of the previous parliamentary elections. The first question concerns how well the elections were held and how much their results could be trusted. The second question, the ambassador said, concerns the events after the elections.

"The result of the elections was a certain alignment of political forces in the Verkhovna Rada. But the question now arises: how adequately do the developments in the Rada reflect the decisions of voters? Are, perhaps, some processes are in a certain sense degrading or ignoring the will of the people?" Smith said.

He also added that an offsite meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine was of particular concern.

"Europe has serious doubt about the legality of the session on April 4. If a similar incident happens again or if there is evidence that people's deputies were forced to change their position in the Verkhovna Rada, then, of course, it would undermine the confidence of EU representatives," he said.

In addition, he mentioned the constant postponement of the decision on repeated elections in five troubled districts where the election results were not established.

"All of these points send us to the first question, namely, how effectively were these elections conducted and how much is the will of the people respected?" the ambassador said.
