Popov: 'I know how to win the elections'

Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov has said that it would be better for him if the mayoral election in Kyiv could be held as soon as possible.

"As for the elections, I have already stated my position: the earlier they take place, the easier it will be for Kyiv and, frankly speaking, for me personally," he told reporters on Monday.

He said that it was hard for him to be in an uncertain situation with these elections.

"There are [rumors] that I'm allegedly to blame for them not being held," he said.

Popov also said that the issue of holding mayoral elections in Kyiv "should be solved in accordance with the law."

When asked when the elections might be held, he said, "Well, September, October. Honestly speaking, I don't care. I know how to win the elections."

As reported, the opposition is insisting that local elections in Kyiv be slated for the beginning of this June. The concerned committee of the Verkhovna Rada proposed scheduling the elections for June 2.

According to the opposition, these should be regular elections, so the terms of office of deputies and the Kyiv mayor are five years.

At the same time, the Party of Regions plans to consider the question of the date of local elections only after the Constitutional Court's decision on this motion.

The extraordinary election of Kyiv City Council deputies and Kyiv's mayor took place in late May 2008.
