Tymoshenko, her allies misrepresenting ECHR ruling, says MP Oliynyk

The ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on the pre-trial detention of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko does not mention any political motives for her arrest, and any statements of her supporters on this matter are attempts to manipulate public opinion, MP Volodymyr Oliynyk of the Party of Regions has said.

According to the lawmaker, Tymoshenko and her supporters are deliberately misinterpreting the court's ruling, as in fact this judgment is not in their favor, the press service of the Party of Regions reported on Tuesday.

"If you read the text of the ECHR's judgment, there is no mention of the alleged political motives of her arrest, much as her allies would like it. It says that her arrest was made under the old Code of Criminal Procedure, which does not comply with the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms. But the decision to arrest Tymoshenko was made by the court also because of the contempt of court displayed by Tymoshenko, as she insulted the judge, used harsh words addressing him, etc. Such behavior of a defendant is not acceptable in any civilized country," Oliynyk said.

The MP also noted that a new Code of Criminal Procedure came into force in Ukraine in November of last year, and it lays down new rules for choosing such a prevention measure as arrest. Therefore, the ruling of the European Court can be regarded as a demand to change the law, which Ukraine has already accomplished, Oliynyk said.

"While the old Criminal Procedure Code did not comply with the Convention, the new code is fully in line with European standards," the MP said.

According to Oliynyk, Tymoshenko's supporters are twisting the court's ruling, trying to find in the document recognition of the existence of political prisoners in Ukraine.

"Once again I appeal to all those who are commenting on the ruling of the European Court, asking them to read it before making any comments. There is no mention of any alleged political motives, nor of any political prisoners, nothing of what Tymoshenko and her entourage are talking about," Oliynyk says.

He also expressed the confidence that the statements of the official representative of the ECHR finally dots the i's and puts an end to any speculation on this matter by Tymoshenko and her entourage.
