Ukrainian official hails cooperation between government and opposition in EU agreement drive

Cooperation between different Ukrainian political forces representing both the authorities and the opposition will allow Kyiv to successfully meet most requirements as it seeks to sign an association agreement with the European Union, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Secretary Andriy Kliuyev said.

Commenting on the appearance of the Friends of Association informal parliamentary group, which was formed by Ukrainian MPs and members of the European Parliament, Kliuyev said that this initiative was supported both by Ukraine's opposition forces and different factions in the European Parliament.

"Constructive dialogue between the authorities and the opposition is always needed when reforms are under way. It is especially important for different political forces of the country to share common productive goals. In this case, it is the process of integration into Europe. The key thing for us is to use European experience in the process of fundamental reforms in Ukraine," the official said. Dialogue between political figures of Ukraine and other European countries has always been very useful, he added.

Parliamentarians of Ukraine and EU countries earlier announced the establishment of the Friends of Association Group, whose preparatory session was held in Brussels on April 24.

The session's joint statement says that this inter-parliamentary group will work to consolidate the political forces within the European Parliament and the Ukrainian Parliament with the aim of further promoting integration processes between Ukraine and the EU.
