Zurabov: Parliament's inability to work reduced intensity of Ukrainian-Russian talks on creation of gas transport consortium

Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov has noted a reduction in the intensity of Ukrainian-Russian negotiations on the creation of a consortium to manage the Ukrainian gas transport system and links this to the blocking of the Verkhovna Rada's work.

"Of course, we cannot deny the fact that the intensity of the negotiations slightly declined. It's necessary to introduce amendments to Ukrainian legislation in order to create a gas transport consortium, regardless of whether it is bilateral or trilateral. And what we have recently seen - the Verkhovna Rada's inability to work – indicates that there could currently be certain difficulties during the introduction of these amendments," he told reporters in Kyiv on April 6, 2013.

He said that in order to create the consortium, Ukraine should introduce amendments to five laws and make "some adjustments in its international obligations."

"The fact that attempts are currently being made to resume the work of the Ukrainian parliament, in our opinion, signals that if the agreements are reached, they can be properly documented," Zurabov said.
