Ukrainian opposition fears possible constitutional coup

The leader of the Ukrainian opposition Batkivschyna faction, Arseniy Yatseniuk, has said he fears that a constitutional coup could be staged in the country.

"Any decision to be adopted outside of parliament's walls will be treated as a constitutional coup attempt," Yatseniuk told journalists on Thursday.

The opposition is prepared to respond to any scenarios, "including both presidential and parliamentary elections," he said.

Any decision adopted outside the Verkhovna Rada session hall will be illegitimate, he said.

Yatseniuk told Interfax-Ukraine that the opposition was going to start a meeting of parliamentarians at the Verkhovna Rada session hall at 1100 local time.

The meeting will be chaired by Ukrainian Parliament Deputy Speaker Ruslan Koshulynsky as Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak is not present at the parliamentary building today, he said.

Koshulynsky was elected to the Ukrainian parliament as a representative of the Svoboda opposition party.

Members of the Ukrainian parliamentary majority earlier announced plans to hold a session on Thursday in the presence of Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak, at which they could consider the possibility of dissolving the current parliament.
