Five killed, nine hospitalized in plane crash in Donetsk, says deputy premier

Five people were killed in a crash of an Antonov An-24 passenger aircraft of South Airlines at Donetsk airport on Wednesday, nine were hospitalized, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul has said.

At a press conference in Donetsk on Thursday morning, he said that a total of 52 people were on board the aircraft, including eight crewmembers.

Vilkul said that 26 people asked for medical assistance after the crash, nine were hospitalized. One of them was diagnosed with a comminuted fracture of a forearm and will be operated on Thursday.

The deputy prime minister also said that all the victims had been identified, but refused to disclose any information about these people.

According to him, the families of those killed in the air crash will get compensation.

Vilkul also said that flight recorders will be taken off the aircraft and examination of them will start on Thursday.

As reported, the An-24 on flight from Odesa to Donetsk overshot the runway at Donetsk Sergey Prokofiev International Airport on Wednesday evening. The aircraft overturned and the aircraft's fuselage broke.

According to preliminary data of the State Service for Emergency Situations of Ukraine, the pilots lost control of the aircraft and it crashed near the runway and broke into two pieces.

It was a charter flight, and all the passengers were football fans heading for Donetsk to watch Shakhtar Donetsk play Borussia Dortmund.

A criminal case has been opened into the crash on charges of violating the air safety rules that resulted in the death of people. Ukraine's Donetsk Region Prosecutor's Officer is in charge of the inquiry.

South Airlines was established in 1999. Its fleet consists of four types of aircraft: Yak-42D, Saab 340B, Embraer-500 and An-24RV aircraft.
