Yanukovych to visit Moscow if necessary to confirm energy-related agreements, says ambassador

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych will make a visit to Moscow on December 18 only if there is the need to confirm results of certain agreements, Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov has said.

"Such a meeting could be held on December 18, but we will work on an agenda and the task of the meeting only if there is a necessity to agree on something," he told journalists in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Zurabov added that he meant some issues related to the energy sphere.

The ambassador also said that the presidents of the two states are regularly in contact by phone.

"Thus, a meeting on December 18 and the fact that the president would make such a trip will mean that we are rather close to achieving practical agreements. And this visit will be organized to confirm mutual understanding not only with a handshake, but also with the signature of documents. I mean agreements particularly in the energy sphere," he said.

According to the diplomat, the sides may discuss the issue related to the Customs Union during the possible visit.

On December 10, the Kommersant-Ukraine newspaper reported referring to its sources that the Ukrainian president is to visit Moscow on December 17-18, 2012 to discuss Ukraine's possible participation in the eastern integration process.
