Ukrainian law enforcers have given their Polish colleagues the materials of a criminal case on the road accident involving a consul who is an employee of Poland's Consulate General in Lutsk, which resulted in the death of a woman, the media liaisons department of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's office in Volyn region reported on Friday.

The accident occurred on the Kovel-Lutsk road at about 1900 on August 26. The consul, while driving a Toyota car, hit a 27-year resident of the village of Holoby who was riding a bike in the opposite direction.

The woman sustained bodily injuries and was admitted to a hospital in Kovel in a serious condition, where she died on September 4.

"A consular employee voluntarily passed a breathalyzer test, according to which he was sober at the time of the accident, and visited the investigation department of the Interior Ministry's office in Volyn region to provide testimony," reads the statement.

Law enforcement officers opened a criminal case under Part 2, Article 286 (violation of road safety rules) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

"The case was opened against the person after all circumstances of the accident were investigated. However, taking into account the fact that the consul was recalled from Poland's Consulate General in Lutsk to Poland, we conducted all of the necessary and possible investigations without him. Therefore, the materials of the criminal case were sent to the competent Polish authorities for further prosecution," the head of the department for investigating road accidents at the investigation department of the Interior Ministry's office in Volyn region, Police Major Yuriy Uhlanov, said.

Thus, Polish law enforcement agencies will take over this case.
