About 30 protestors gathered near CEC HQ in Kyiv on Tuesday morning

About 30 people gathered on Tuesday morning near the Central Election Commission headquarters in Kyiv to protest vote rigging in the recent parliamentary elections.

Batkivschyna activists set up two tents near the monument to 19th century poet, writer and civil activist Lesia Ukrainka, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.

Police were deployed nearby.

Lawmaker Andriy Senchenko complained to reporters about "petty nasty tricks staged by the authorities" on Monday and during the night. Traffic and riot policemen stopped a truck and seized plastic chairs intended for protestors, he claimed.

The Kyiv police, however, denied claims that "force was used against participants in mass events."

Five Berkut riot policemen where deployed on a mission to maintained public order at about 9:30 p.m. on November 5 when illegally erected tents were being removed by communal service workers from the square near the Central Election Commission, the police said.

Svoboda party leader Oleh Tiahnybok earlier said that riot policemen had attempted to disperse the protestors who had stayed near the Election Commission building overnight and tried to pull down their tents.

Reports said earlier that police urged residents of Kyiv on Monday to abide by the official decision to curb mass events in central Kyiv and near the monument to Lesia Ukrainka. Police officials later said that protestors had been warned their rally was illegal. Protestors were also told that no sanctions would be applied against them except if provocations are staged.
