Tymoshenko had two phone conversations with relative on October 31, says penitentiary service

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had two phone conversations via a mobile phone on October 31, the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine has said.

"On October 31, upon a personal written request of the convict, Tymoshenko again was allowed to talk to her relatives via a mobile phone. The phone calls took around one hour," reads the statement.

Thus, according to the penitentiary service, Tymoshenko made three phone calls to her relatives on October 30 and 31.

"The State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine said that the possibility to make phone calls is not foreseen technically and legally for hospitalized convicts," reads the statement.

Earlier, the administration of the Kachanivska Penal Colony permitted former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is undergoing treatment at the Kharkiv-based central Clinical Hospital No. 5, to make a phone call on October 31. According to the ex-premier's defense lawyer, Tymoshenko had an opportunity to talk to her relatives for the first time over a long time.

On October 11, 2011, Pechersky District Court in Kyiv sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for overstepping her authority when signing the 2009 gas contracts with Russia. She has served her sentence in Kachanivska Penal Colony in Kharkiv since late December 2011.

She was transferred to a clinic on May 9 to undergo medical treatment and a rehabilitation course under the supervision of doctors from the German clinic, Charite.

On October 29, Tymoshenko went on hunger strike in protest against the falsification of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
