Statistics: Ukraine's population shrinks by over 100,000 people in eight months, to 45.56 million

Ukraine's population as of September 1, 2012 amounted to 45.559 million people, a natural decrease of 100,764 compared to the beginning of the year, which was partially offset by a migration increase of 26,185, according to the State Statistics Service.

According to the service, 31.323 million people (67.75%) lived in towns and cities, and 14.236 million people (32.25%) lived in villages.

Ukraine's permanent population as of September 1 was 45.379 million people.

The population grew in eight of the 27 regions in Ukraine: Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, Kyiv, Rivne, Chernivtsi regions, Crimea, and in the city of Sevastopol. In other regions it shrank, whereas the population in Kirovohrad region for the first time fell below one million people (a population of less than one million was earlier reported only in Chernivtsi region and in Sevastopol).

The natural population increase was observed only in Volyn, Zakarpattia, Rivne, Chernivtsi regions and in Kyiv, while in Ivano-Frankivsk region the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by six people. In other regions, the number of deaths was much higher than the number of births.

In January-August 2012, there were 346,926 births and 447,690 deaths in Ukraine, with the natural decrease being 100,764.
