Femen doesn't pay its activists, earns funds on sales of branded clothes, accessories, reads statement

Activists from the Femen women's right movement have stated that their organization does not pay people to participate in their protests and that all of their actions are based on free-will and ideology.

"The Femen organization never pays its activists - all participants of the movement join its protests voluntarily and on ideological basis," reads a press release of the organization, which was distributed in response to a journalistic investigation by the 1+1 Channel into activities of Femen.

The statement also reads that the TV report on the organization contains distorted information. In particular, according to Femen, the author of the investigation, journalist Daryna Chyzh, did not take part in Femen's protest in Paris, although this was reported in the Hroshi (Money) TV program on September 19.

"The information in the Hroshi TV program dated September 19, 2012 was made up or consciously exaggerated. Since none of the off-screen commentaries is confirmed by documents, we are accusing the Hroshi TV program of making a paid story about Femen and filing a lawsuit in court against the program for obvious slander," reads the statement.

In a commentary on the funding-related issue, Femen said that four organizers of the movement "receive material aid of UAH 4,800 to UAH 8,000 from the organization." Private contributions and the earnings from sales of Femen branded clothes and accessories are the sources of the organization's income.

Earlier, the Hroshi TV program said that the Femen activists earn at least $1,000, and the maintenance of the organization's office in Kyiv costs around $2,500 per month.
