Ukraine, Poland to be able to respect interests of Polish farmers, unblock Ukrainian-Polish border - trade rep

Ukraine and Poland, during negotiations with Polish Ministers of Development and Technology of Poland Krzysztof Hetman and Agriculture Czesław Siekierski, developed a number of solutions for the constructive unblocking of the Ukrainian-Polish border while respecting the interests of Polish farmers, said Deputy Minister of Economy - Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka.

"Four hours of very intense negotiations with Minister of Development and Technology of Poland Krzysztof Hetman and Minister of Agriculture of Poland Czesław Siekierski... We were able to find a common language and are working on a constructive solution on how to unblock the border and take into account the interests of farmers in Poland and Ukraine. This is not easy, but possible," he wrote on Facebook.

The Trade Representative of Ukraine pointed out the importance of the approaches proposed by Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal during his speech on the Polish-Ukrainian border for building a possible understanding.

"During the entire four hours of negotiations, the option of closing the border was not mentioned. As Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said quite clearly, this would be a very painful decision for our economies. To stop trade, even for a day, which in annual terms is $11.7 billion (and according to Polish statistics even more) - this is too painful. Not to mention transit, which is vital for Ukraine," Kachka emphasized.

He added that he would not go into details yet, but a constructive solution is possible.

Kachka asked Ukrainian society to carefully read Donald Tusk's statement - with all the elements of rhetoric and punctuation - and stressed that news headlines can be misleading.

"At this moment, more than ever, we will remain calm and work hard," the trade representative of Ukraine urged.
