Vodafone Ukraine network not operating in occupied areas of Donetsk region due equipment blackout

2 min read

The main reason of non-operation of Vodafone Ukraine's network in the occupied areas of Donetsk region is equipment blackout, according to the mobile communications operator.

"We have restored wire lines, and the network is idle due to the blackout of some equipment in this area. As soon as power is supplied, the network will be available for calls," Director for Corporate Management and Control at Vodafone Ukraine Oleh Prozhyvalsky told Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that if so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" DPR is interested in the full restoration of communications with Ukraine in the region, access for specialists of the operator to repair wire lines in Olenivka should be provided, and it would be the duplicating line.

"There is another wire line of Fticom [the provider in Donetsk], which enters the same premises where our equipment is located. It could be also used to ensure additional guarantees for the operation of the network. Unfortunately, all our communication lines are passing the frontline and could be damaged any time," Prozhyvalsky said.

He said that at present, over 30% of Vodafone Ukraine's towers in the ATO zone are not operating.

Prozhyvalsky also said that due to failures in operation in occupied areas of Donetsk region the operator cannot finish the transfer of some subscribers to other tariffs.

"We are obliged to notify subscribers in advance about the transfer to other tariffs. This work was started. We have not finished it yet, having notified only a part of the subscribers in the region. And since now we cannot notify subscribers in advance - due to failures in work. We cannot finish their transfer to other tariffs," he said.

Commenting on the information about the requirements of DPR regarding Vodafone-Ukraine's need to pay for electricity for its equipment, Prozhyvalsky said that the operator would not pay for electricity to companies in Kyiv uncontrolled territories.

"We are working exclusively in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian legislation, we have no right to conclude any agreements with that territory. We ca not pay for anything that would not be demanded from us," he said.

At the same time, he said that "before they captured Donetskoblenergod, we paid for electricity in the region on the territory of Ukraine. After capturing it, they demanded that we pay directly to the DPR, but we cannot and will not do this."
