Ukrainian port industry should focus on 'general geographic' transit – USPA chief

Ukrainian seaports should focus in terms of transit cargo handling on the general geography of transit in various directions, Head of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) Raivis Veckagans has said.

"Today transit from Russia is ten million tonnes per year. There are issues of geopolitics, issues of supporting cargo turnover with the aggressor country... We should focus on the so-called 'geographical transit,' without politics. These are cargo flows from Asia to Belarus, Moldova, Poland, Germany - something that can be carried by sea," he said during a press tour dedicated to dredging in the Pivdenny Port, while commenting on the transit of Russian cargo.

Veckagans said that the transit of Russian cargo had significantly decreased in recent years, from 60 million tonnes to 10 million tonnes, and that the growth of this figure was unlikely to be expected.

"The resource base that comes from Russia is coal, iron ore, and not only through ports, but also by land. There's an increase here, but it's no more than 10%," he added.

Veckagans noted that Turkey also had an interest in exporting products by sea through Ukrainian ports to Europe and that it was necessary to get oriented at these trends.
