Transparent privatization, better state enterprise management will improve public sector efficiency - IMF

Transparent privatization and improved management of state-owned enterprises will allow reducing and improving the efficiency of the public sector, Goesta Ljungman, the IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine, has said.

"Most state-owned enterprises are unprofitable, but this can be changed. It is possible to improve management of state-owned enterprises by creating an independent board of executive heads, supervisory boards. Improving the public sector situation, privatization of certain enterprises and anti-corruption actions - I think these are good enough approaches to cope with this too large sector, which accounts for 20% of GDP," he said at the annual Ukrainian Financial Forum in Odesa organized ICU Investment Group.

At the same time, the official said providing a transparent market and transparent privatization will ensure preventing a large number of problems.

"It is possible to reduce this sector in a certain way, increase its efficiency. I think the matter concerns the poor experience of privatization in the 1990s. The solution to the problem is opening the market, providing a transparent market and transparent privatization. By providing this, we can prevent a large number of problems," he said.
