Members of the European Commission (EC) agreed at their last meeting to keep an eye on the United States' decision regarding sanctions against Russia, EC spokesman Alexander Winterstein said.

The EC is following the current situation and the whole process very carefully, and will be closely watching the practical implementation of the law, Winterstein said at a briefing in Brussels on Friday.

Vigilance is the EC's motto of the day, he said.

Asked what its attitude was towards Donald Trump possibly vetoing the sanctions bill, the EC said that Brussels does not interfere in the U.S. legislative process.

At this stage it is premature to speculate regarding what will happen in the future, Winterstein said. We shall wait and see and remain vigilant, he said.
