Ukraine, Moldova to apply to EC seeking to build HPPs on Dniester River

Ukraine and Moldova plan to apply to the European Commission (EC) within one month with a proposal to analyze Ukraine's plans to build new hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) on the Dniester River, Prime Minister of Moldova Pavel Filip has said.

"I think that during one month a common address to the European Commission asking to help us to deeply analyze the possible consequences of construction of this HPP on the Dniester River will be finished," Filip told reporters after a meeting of prime ministers of the GUAM member countries (Georgia-Ukraine-Azerbaijan-Moldova) in Kyiv on Monday.

He also said that at a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman the eco-system of the Dniester River in the context of plans to build HPPs there was discussed.

Groysman said that the eco-system issue is a top priority issue.

"The assessment will be carried out and the first issue is ecology. We are in communication," he said.
