Ukrnafta appeals to international arbitration with claim against Russia regarding capture of fuel stations in Crimea

PJSC Ukrnafta has appealed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague with a claim against the Russian Federation concerning the protection of its investment in connection with the seizure of fuel filling stations in Crimea, the press service of the company has said.

"Ukrnafta confirms the information concerning the initiation of arbitration proceedings against the Russian Federation at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague... The arbitration proceedings were initiated on June 15, 2015 to obtain compensation for the illegal seizure of filling stations in the territory of the Crimean peninsula, which was occupied and annexed by Russia in 2014," reads a statement.

The reason for the suit was the bilateral investment protection agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation dated 1998, according to which each party undertook an obligation not to nationalize or expropriate investment made by the investors of the other country without the timely payment of fair compensation.
