Kazakhstan could deliver oil products, gas, uranium to Ukraine via South Caucasus by rail - Ukraine's energy minister

Kazakhstan expressed its interest in discussing projects to supply Kyiv with oil products, gas condensate and uranium concentrate, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Volodymyr Demchyshyn has said.

"We have certain ideas on gas where the situation is a bit more difficult, both with availability and with transit... As a minimum, this will be shipments of oil products, shipments of gas condensate, shipments of uranium concentrate, these are some very precise things," he told reporters in Astana when asked whether Kazakhstan is interested in any joint energy projects with Ukraine.

Kazakhstan "is a profit nation in this field," as it has the resources for the diversification of its exports and Kazakh companies are interested in sales of energy resources to Ukraine.

"As for the routes, there is an option of shipment by rail via Azerbaijan, Georgia and across the seas," Demchyshyn said.

"There is also an opportunity for transit, say, the transit of oil - going further into Europe. Currently, the tariff policy doesn't allow for it, that is, makes it economically unviable. But certain ideas exist about how this policy can be modified. And this is also on the agenda of today's talks," he said.

A great number of enterprises in Kazakhstan are privately owned and they decide independently on the viability of the projects, Demchyshyn said.

"But the state, I believe, supports these contacts too, as long as this creates extra jobs and so on," Demchyshyn said.
