Poroshenko signs law terminating cooperation with Russia in building Khmelnytsky NPP power units

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed into law bills terminating an agreement between the Ukrainian Cabinet of ministers and the Russian government on cooperation in constructing power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and abrogating the Ukrainian law on the location, design, and construction of power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP, the Ukrainian presidential press service reported on Saturday.

The agreement between the Ukrainian Cabinet of ministers and the Russian government on cooperation in constructing power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant was signed in Kyiv on June 9, 2010 and ratified by the Verkhovna Rada on January 12, 2011.

The passage of the above-mentioned bills by the Verkhovna Rada on September 16 would open the way to building power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP using modified VVER-1000 reactors shipped by a European supplier and would ensure their safe operation in keeping with national requirements and IAEA standards, the document says.
