Rada permits removal of waste nuclear fuel from Ukraine for period of up to 30 years

The Ukrainian parliament has permitted the removal of waste nuclear fuel assemblies from Ukraine for processing for a period of up to 30 years.

A total of 273 lawmakers on Tuesday supported draft law No. 1917 which was drafted by Petro Poroshenko Bloc MP Oleksandr Dombrovsky, and People's Will MP Volodymyr Bandurov.

The law stipulates that uranium oxide concentrate can be removed from Ukraine for a period of no more than two years and nine months.

The authors of the law said that the biggest term for processing waste nuclear fuel and uranium concentrate abroad, set by the Customs Code at 365 days, did not suit the technological needs of the nuclear industry.

As reported, Ukraine is removing waste nuclear fuel for temporary storage and processing in Russia.
