Ukrainian president, Hungarian premier discuss energy cooperation

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation, including energy cooperation, in a phone conversation.

The sides touched, among other things, upon natural gas shipments, the presidential press service reported on Monday evening.

"In particular, Petro Poroshenko noted the importance of joint approaches to energy policy to strengthen regional and European energy security," the report reads.

Poroshenko and Orban also discussed technical capabilities to diversify gas shipments due to the launch of a new interconnector between Hungary and Slovakia as early as at the end of the current year.

The Ukrainian president also suggested introducing joint control over the Ukrainian-Hungarian border to boost economic cooperation and fight corruption.

Orban in turn said he positively evaluates the development of the Ukrainian-Hungarian dialogue at the highest level and urged to further develop good-neighbor relations. He assured that Hungary is a reliable partner of Ukraine and fully supports its sovereignty and territorial integrity, which in his opinion, is the guarantee of stability and good neighborhood.

The sides agreed to maintain a regular dialogue to coordinate joint efforts, which is an important factor for the unity of the European Union and its solidarity with Ukraine. Poroshenko invited Orban to visit Ukraine after the formation of a new Ukrainian government.
