Ukrainian sugar refineries cut beet processing by 47% in 2013

Ukrainian sugar refineries accepted 9.2 million tonnes of sugar beets in 2013, which is 47% down year-over-year, the State Statistics Service has reported.

The service said that the average price paid by sugar refineries for beets to producers fell by 8%, to UAH 396 per tonne. The refineries bought sugar beets from households at UAH 421.80 per tonne on average and from agricultural companies at UAH 395.60 per tonne.

The share of sugar beets bought for cash fell from 37% in 2012 to 36% (3.35 million tonnes), the share of beets bought on a tolling basis narrowed from 37% to 29% (2.65 million tonnes). The share of processing of own beets last year grew to 35% (3.225 million tonnes) compared with 26% a year ago.

As reported, referring to tentative data from the State Statistics Service, in 2013 sugar beet harvest in Ukraine fell by 41.7%, to 10,750 tonnes.
