Ukraine cuts electricity consumption by 4.1% in 7 months

Electricity consumption, including in-process losses in the Ukrainian grids, in January-July 2013 fell by 4.1%, or by 4.555 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), year-over-year, to 106.209 billion kWh.

Electricity consumption that did not include in-process losses in the grids fell by 3.5%, or 3.157 billion kWh, to 85.871 billion kWh, a source in the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry told Interfax-Ukraine.

Ukraine's industry over the period under review cut electricity consumption by 7.6% (not including in-process losses in the grids), to 38.659 billion kWh. In particular, metallurgy reduced electricity consumption by 7.3%, to 20.256 billion, the fuel sector saw a 7.5% decline, to 4.92 billion kWh, engineering a 10% decline, to 3.113 billion kWh, the chemical and petrochemical industry decreased electricity consumption by 13.4%, to 3.175 billion kWh, while food and processing sectors decreased consumption by 2.5%, to 2.632 billion kWh, the construction materials industry by 3.1%, to 1.399 billion kWh, and other sectors by 6.9%, to 3.165 billion kWh.

Electricity consumption by households in Ukraine in January-July 2013 was up by 1.1%, to 24.092 billion kWh; and municipal consumers saw a 0.6% decline in electricity consumption, to 10.836 billion kWh.

The share of industry in total electricity consumption in January-July 2013 shrank to 45% from 47% year-over-year, while the share of households increased from 26.8% to 28.1%.

In July 2013, electricity consumption including in-process losses fell by 4.4% or 658.6 million compared to July 2012, to 14.201 billion kWh, while consumption without in-process losses in the grids was down by 3% or 359.6 million kWh, to 11.589 billion kWh.

As reported, electricity consumption, including in-process losses in the Ukrainian grids, in 2012 grew by 0.4%, or by 764.4 million kWh, year-over-year, to 188.436 billion kWh. Electricity consumption that did not include in-process losses in the grids fell by 0.01%, or 20.9 million kWh, to 150.474 billion kWh.
