The Russian sanitation authority has banned imports of the output produced by Roshen, a major Ukrainian confectionary company, head of the authority and Russia's Chief Sanitation Doctor Gennady Onishchenko told Interfax on Monday.

"Unfortunately, our apprehensions have proved true, a fact which we sincerely regret. The identified irregularities give us reason to raise the issue of banning the imports of all products of this company," he said.

"Instructions have been given to customs bodies to ban the importation of confectionary products of Roshen company into this country," he said.

Rospotrebnadzor picked confectionaries produced at four of the company's facilities - in Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Mariupol and Kremenchuk and concluded that they did not comply with declared parameters, he said.

"The quality and safety requirements were violated. There are reasons to speak of systemic violations of this country's legislation on the protection of consumers' rights," he said.

On July 11 Rospotrebnadzor expressed its concern over the quality of Ukrainian confectionery products.

"The service has recently been increasingly concerned over the quality of confectionery products coming from Ukraine. In the first place, questions are raised by the products of Roshen," Onishchenko told Interfax.

This was not the first time that the service had issues with products delivered from Ukraine. Earlier Russia banned the import of cheeses made by several Ukrainian producers because they did not conform to Russia's technical regulations for milk and dairy products. Onishchenko held talks with a Ukrainian delegation after which a mechanism for the return of Ukrainian cheese to the Russian market was worked out.
