Higher tariffs for international and domestic passenger rail transportation come into force

2 min read

Tariffs for passenger transportation by rail in all categories of cars, except for sleeping wagons, Intercity+ trains and commuter trains, on domestic and international routes were changed from July 16, 2013.

According to the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia, the cost of tickets on internal routes rose by 10%, and those on international routes by 5%.

Thus, the cost of rail transportation on domestic routes in second class and compartment cars grew by 10%, and at the next stage - from October 1 - the cost will increase by another 10%.

The cost of tickets in all categories of cars, except for sleeping carriages, on international routes increased by 5%, and another increase by 5% will take place on October 1.

"The increase in tariffs concerns only the ticket part, which is one of the components of the fare (the full fare consists of the ticket price plus the cost of a reserved seat, plus VAT, an insurance fee and commission)," reads the report.

"Raising the level of tariffs for passenger transportation will partially reduce the loss ratio of passenger services and allow the use of part of the funds for car repairs," reads a statement.

In addition, the growth in rates is due to the need to reduce the cross-subsidization of passenger services at the expense of freight carriage.
