Ukraine and Japan have agreed on 536 projects to be realized using funds received from the sale of Assigned Amount Units (AAUs) to Japan under Kyoto protocol, Ecology and Natural Resources Minister of Ukraine Oleh Proskuriakov has said.

"As of April 1, 2013, some 536 projects in 24 regions of the country have been agreed with Japan under CERs sales agreements," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Proskuriakov said that the total value of the projects is assessed at UAH 3.814 billion, and UAH 571 million has been sent for their financing.

The minister said that over 500 projects on the renovation of heating systems in the social area would be finished by September 1, 2013. Large projects being implemented under the agreement will be finished in 2014.

Proskuriakov also noted that as a part of the realization of the project using a green investment scheme an agreement on supply of 1,200 Toyota Prius hybrid cars for the Ukrainian road police was signed with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation. The cars will be delivered to the Interior Ministry of Ukraine by late September 2013, the minister added.

Earlier the ecology minister said that thanks to the money received by Ukraine under the Kyoto protocol, the country is implementing six big projects, in particular the modernization of the cars of Kyiv subway, the introduction of the energy-saving technologies in the Artek international camp, a project connected with heat pumps in Horlivka (Donetsk region), and the purification of mine waters in Luhansk region.

Vladyslav Yakubovsky, the head of the State Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine, in November 2012 said that the total cost of the realization of 544 projects on the renovation of heating systems of social infrastructure facilities amounts to UAH 1.921 billion.

The replacement of UAZ and VAZ patrol cars with Toyota Prius hybrid cars will cut emissions by the police's cars by 70%.

Ukraine has sold 44 million AAUs to Japan, and 3 million AAUs to Spain.
