Ukraine wants to resume gas supplies from Turkmenistan, says Yanukovych

Ukraine is interested in the resumption of gas supplies from Turkmenistan, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"I've confirmed Ukraine's interest in the resumption of the supply of natural gas from Turkmenistan, and its willingness to deepen cooperation in this field. Our country has every opportunity to unite efforts to study alternative routes of gas supplies for its own needs as well as for export to Europe," he said in a press statement after the talks with Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat on Wednesday.

The prospectus for a eurobond issue circulated recently by Ukraine shows that the country does not expect gas imports from Turkmenistan in 2013.

"Gas has not been shipped to Ukraine under direct contracts with Turkmenistan since early 2006. The government does not expect that such shipments will be resumed in 2013. Turkmenistan earlier confirmed possession of resources necessary for arranging supplies to Ukraine. However, Turkmenistan's position is that the terms and conditions of transit should be first agreed upon with Russia," the prospectus says.

It was reported earlier that imports of Central Asian gas coming from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to Ukraine in 2011 was handled by Dmytro Firtash's OstChem. However, this company has been importing only Russian natural gas to Ukraine since 2012.
