Experts believe Yuschenko ready to use force

The application of force by the Security Service of Ukraine during the investigation of the criminal case against the officials of the national gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy and the Customs Service of Ukraine have shown Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko's readiness to resort to forceful actions, Ukrainian analysts believe.

РR group Polittech director Taras Berezovets said this at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.

"Amidst the political anarchy in Ukraine, the law-enforcement agencies may be the only efficient institution. And Alpha special division, in fact, fulfilled its task... It showed Yuschenko's readiness to resort to forceful actions, and that he is not going to stop," the analyst said.

According to director of the Penter center for applied political studies Volodymyr Fesenko the attempt to seize Naftogaz has been a kind of rehearsal.

"As in 2004 the events in Mukacheve [during the mayor's elections] were the rehearsal of the presidential elections with the application of force the use of Alpha fighters has been an act of intimidation, which however has yielded no results," the political analyst said.

"Yuschenko has turned into a second Kuchma, but in a "milder" version," head of the Open Policy Analytical Center Ihor Zhdanov said, in turn.
