EP's resolution on Ukraine signal for initialing association agreement in December, says Regions Party MP
The deputy head of the Party of Regions in charge of international policy, Leonid Kozhara, believes that the European Parliament's resolution on Ukraine provides a good foundation for the development of relations between Ukraine and the EU.
He said this while commenting on the adoption of European Parliament resolution on Ukraine on Thursday, the press service of the Party of Regions reported.
"The resolution adopted by the European Parliament is very positive for Ukraine. First, the resolution is a signal for the European Commission that the Ukraine-EU summit should be a success, and the Association Agreement with the EU should be initialed," the politician said.
In addition, the document has a reference to Article 49 of the Treaty on the EU. "It means that Ukraine has the right to apply for membership of the EU, as can any other European state, provided it adheres to the principles of democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, minority rights and the rule of law," the lawmaker explained.
The politician stressed that the EP resolution creates a very good foundation for the development of relations between Ukraine and the EU, but also creates a generally positive background for the EU-Ukraine summit.
"Moreover, the European Parliament expressed support for Ukraine's gas talks with Russia. The resolution mentions some problems that exist in Ukraine's domestic policies, but we believe that on the whole the document is positive, and it guides the entire European Union towards positive relations with Ukraine," Kozhara said.
