Kuchma says he doesn't object to returning to politics, becoming MP

Second Ukrainian President (1994-2005) Leonid Kuchma has said he could return to politics.

"I even saw the results of polls regarding my chances of getting into parliament in some majority constituencies. And, you know, they are not bad at all. That is why I'll cite the popular wisdom 'Don't make promises you can't keep.' Or as diplomats say: "Never say never," Kuchma told Weekly.ua in an interview.

According to him, the return to the mixed election system could restore the connection between voters and MPs.

"We should move towards European standards, when a deputy represents a party and a district, when he is close to voters and is responsible for his promises. Probably, in 2004, when we passed to the proportional system, we ran ahead of time, and what is more, [ahead of] our readiness for it. The parties, and we have 150 of them, to say the least, discredited this system," Kuchma said.
