The European Union has expressed concern over the deteriorating health of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and urged the Ukrainian authorities to ensure she soon obtains an independent medical examination.
EU foreign relations spokesman Michael Mann made a relevant statement in Brussels on Friday.
"We are concerned over reports that Tymoshenko's health has deteriorated, and we urge the Ukrainian authorities to ensure she gets a timely and independent medical examination and professional medical care as appropriate," Mann said.
According to him, such a response will help clarify the situation, which is also in the interests of the court.
Tymoshenko has been held in Kyiv jail since August 5. Her health has deteriorated over the past few days. However, the ex-premier has rejected the medical assistance offered by the detention center's medical service. She requests a consultation with her personal doctor, whom she says she trusts.
