Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has called "for a halt to any false internal divisions and misunderstanding" on the 90th Anniversary of the Ukraine's uniting into one state, the presidential press service reported on Thursday.
In his address, the president voiced hope the meaning of this event "emerges from the frames of political, historical and even geographical circumstances of 1919."
"Despite other empires, occupations and assimilation, the Ukrainian nation won [unity], and remained united and undivided. This notion came from the depths of people awakened to life."
Yuschenko described the Unification Act [unification of lands] as representing the "unity of the Ukrainian spirit, time and space."
"The unification of our independence in 1991 resulted from this day," he said.
Yuschenko said he was sure that "only a native state, its unity, and recognition of our national sovereignty and unification is a priority, [and the] basis for the full and secure existence of our people."
