The maximum gas price in Ukraine should not exceed $230-250 per 1,000 cubic meters. "This is a maximum," Regions Party Leader Viktor Yanukovych said in an interview given in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery on Monday.
Asked how the Ukrainian economy would survive if the gas price were higher, Yanukovych said that it is necessary to switch from an external market of gas usage to an internal one.
"I believe, it is very important in the near future to switch as much as possible to the internal market. Thus we can save both the economy and the country," he said.
"According to this strategy, we should certainly change this balance. The external market should be around 30% of consumption, and the rest [supplied by] the internal market," Yanukovych said.
Commenting on Ukrainian-Russian gas talks, he said, the position of the Ukrainian government was "wrong and irresponsible."
