Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has called on the newly elected local government representatives to reject political interests and focus on working together for the sake of the Ukrainian people.
The head of state said this in an address released by his press service on Tuesday.
"Now it's time for all elected officials - from parliament deputies to local council members- to throw away confusion and begin to work together. I call on everyone to refrain from pursuing political interests and focus on joint work for the sake of the Ukrainian people," Yanukovych said.
"In the elections, the people elected both experienced leaders and new people. Such a combination of experience and initiative will stimulate the development of local government in Ukraine. The introduction of single-mandate constituencies allowed voters to choose leaders who know local problems and will be able to help resolve them," he said.
He also said that the elections had technical flaws and were complicated.
"There were a large number of candidates for posts at all levels. It was not easy to organize the process of counting the votes of several types of ballots at once. I have already ordered the start of work to amend our electoral legislation. We will cooperate with the international community and the best Ukrainian experts in this sphere," reads the statement.
Yanukovych said that his goal was to have an effective and transparent electoral legislation.
The president also thanked all observers who monitored Sunday's local elections in Ukraine.
"I want to thank Ukrainian and international observers for their attention and advice. Your efforts are helping us build a democratic country," reads the address.
