The voting at Ukraine's election to local government went smoothly in Ukraine, but the country's election legislation needs to be improved, observers of the European Parliament have said.
"Judging from my observations, we can say that the election day was calm and the observers' general impressions are positive," MEP Pawel Kowal said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.
He noted that the observers of the European Parliament will give their overall assessment of the local elections in Ukraine at the end of this week, after a detailed analysis of all the stages of the election process, rather than just the day of the ballot.
The member of European Parliament pointed out that amendments were made to the electoral law shortly before the actual election, as was done during the presidential campaign in Ukraine.
"This is the second time that the electoral legislation has been amended before an election," Kowal said, adding that this worries the international community.
According to Kowal, the imperfect legislation caused problems in the electoral commissions' work.
