Azerbaijan is ready to discuss new plans for cooperation with Ukraine in the energy sphere, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has said.
"The issues that you [President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych] noted are of great importance for us, for our relations. Issues connected with the energy policy between our countries were always resolved in a friendly, constructive and mutually beneficial way," Aliyev said at the opening of the second meeting of the Council of Presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan in Kyiv on Thursday.
According to Aliyev, there are currently new ideas and possibilities for extending bilateral cooperation in the energy sphere.
He noted that the energy component of bilateral relations positively influences the growth of trade between the two countries.
The president of Azerbaijan also noted that the issues of cooperation in the oil and gas sectors that will be discussed during his current visit would be very important in general for the development of bilateral relations.
Yanukovych, in turn, thanked his colleague for his attention to the issues of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. According to him, this sector is very important for Ukraine.
"We understand today that Azerbaijan occupies a very important position in the Caspian region and in the region of Asia on the whole," the Ukrainian president said.
In addition, Aliyev said that cooperation in the framework of the Caspian and Black Seas basin is impossible without the participation of Ukraine and Azerbaijan.
