The current cancer treatment model – concentration of treatment in large specialized centers – is the most effective in the conditions of the limited resources, Chief of the Kyiv City Cancer Clinical Center Oleksandr Kliusov has said.
"Many achievements of the national cancer treatment system were adopted at the end of the last century by our foreign colleagues. Today, after changing the similar system of their countries, most of them say this organization of work is the most effective," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
Kliusov said that in some Ukrainian regions liquidation of regional cancer early treatment clinics was started.
"It is easy to understand fears of cancer specialists in Ukraine that hasty steps in the so-called 'reformation' of highly specific, including cancer treatment, could result in the destruction of the system," he said.
He said that in Kyiv results of treating many cancer cases are comparable with the results of leading clinics in Europe.
Kliusov said that in the conditions of the limited resources cancer specialists cannot develop new medical technologies and introduce them, modernize out-of-date equipment, which could worsen the result.
"I think that we should speak not about reforms, but about the creation of a new effective model of financing of the cancer treatment," he said.
He also said that the financing of cancer treatment in Kyiv has grown in the past two years thanks to city budget allotments.
