The March of Equality organized by the LGBTI community activists in central Kyiv passed off peacefully.
The procession took around half an hour and ended near Lva Tolstoho Square, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.
The parade participants were carrying placards that read, "Do not be afraid to change everything," "LGBTI rights are human rights," and were chanting: "Human rights are above all!"
Some people on the sidewalk shouted "shame" before being surrounded by police and moved aside.
Half an hour later, the organizers in Lva Tolstoho Square urged the assembled to break up because the parade was now over.
Also present among the March of Equality participants were Petro Poroshenko Bloc parliamentarians Serhiy Leschenko, Svitlana Zalischuk and Mustafa Nayyem, who came to show their solidarity and support for the event.
The authorities took unprecedented security measures, with police heavily outnumbering the parade participants, some streets were closed to traffic and pedestrians.
It was reported that Ukraine's National Police chief Khatia Dekanoidze said that some 6,000 police officers would be providing public order during the March of Equality. The parade itself involved around 1,000 participants.
