Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met on Friday with Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, who arrived in Ukraine to attend the inauguration of Ukraine's new president Viktor Yanukovych.
During the meeting, Poroshenko conveyed his gratitude to Congo's President Joseph Kabila, for his personal assistance in the release of the Ukrainian sailors from the Ιsland of Luck ship and sending them to Ukraine. He also thanked the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Congo for his personal efforts to resolve this case. Poroshenko stressed that the court fully acquitted the Ukrainian seamen.
Poroshenko and Thambwe Mwamba also focused on the prospects and potential of the bilateral cooperation in political, trade and economic areas. Congo's minister suggested organize an official visit to Ukraine of President Kabila in the latter half of 2010. The parties agreed to negotiate specific terms of the visit through diplomatic channels.
